Local Artist Designs Metro Station Mural

A bright, colorful display of fruits, vegetables, breads and cheeses surround the Dupont Circle Metro Station’s long term construction project to replace both escalators.
Local artist, Marcella Kriebel, designed the mural and drew inspiration for the mural from the neighborhood farmers market. “Food is a cultural touchstone and is the heartbeat of communicating with people,” Kriebel said of her installation. “It is really gratifying to be able to respond to the Dupont Circle Farmers Market, a DC institution, with art.”
The AIT program works to incorporate both visual and performing arts into the transit system to enhance customer experience. In collaboration with the Dupont Circle BID, WMATA has worked to to install Kriebel’s mural around the metro station’s north entrance fencing.
“Through using visual art to transform the temporary fencing around the Dupont Circle Metro Station’s North Entrance, we are able to highlight Marcella’s incredible artwork, as well as enliven the barriers around the station,” AIT program manager Laurent Odde said.
The mural will remain throughout the duration of the current construction project which is slated for completion in the fall of 2025. Visit wmata.com to learn more.
