Get Competitive and Creative at the Blossom Kite Festival

As days grow longer and sunnier, the National Cherry Blossom Festival continues its celebration of spring with the annual, beloved tradition of the Blossom Kite Festival.

This year’s event will take place on Saturday March 30 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the National Monument Grounds. Two fields will feature a variety of events throughout the day including professional demonstrations, local competitions and live musical performances.

Specialized demonstrations include a showcase of kites by Mikio Toki, a master of traditional Edo-style kites from Japan, choreographed performances by Team KiteLife, Wings Over Washington Kite Club and other local, national and internationally recognized kite fliers as well as live musical performances by the Ian Carroll Band, Guava Jelly and Not a Saint Band.

Competitors can participate creatively by submitting their original kite designs as part of the 2024 theme: Colors of the Wind. Kites will be judged in a variety of categories including: most impressive flight, most original design, best craftsmanship and more. Participants can also test their kites in the sky at the hot tricks showdown and the Rokkaku Battle.
