On Sat., Nov. 18, The DC Tutoring & Mentoring Initiative (DCTMI) will host The Capitol Hill: Coming Together for Kids & Community at the Southeast Library (403 Seventh St. SE) near Eastern Market from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Learn about opportunities to volunteer on Capitol Hill, across the river in Ward 8 or in other District neighborhoods. Drop by for a quick conversation or stay and chat with neighbors and the DCTMI team over Call Your Mother bagels and coffee.
Two out of three DC students are reading below grade level. That’s more than more than 60,000 kids. Nearly one in four are chronically absent at least one day a week. The DC Tutoring & Mentoring Initiative (DCTMI) is dedicated to changing that. The organization’s goal is for at least one in 10 DC adults to get involved as a tutor or mentor so every student has access to the extra support they need. This strengthens schools, fosters community and advances equity across our city.
All it takes is one to two hours a week to make a difference in a student’s life. DCTMI makes it easy by matching volunteers to one of its partner organizations or schools based on each person’s availability, skills and preferences. Be part of creating a more safe, vibrant and equitable community by working with DCTMI to ensure today’s kids are ready for tomorrow’s challenges. There’s no quick fix for public education. As the saying goes, it takes a village or neighborhood to raise a child.
Who is DCTMI
Founded in 2016, DCTMI recruited more than 3,000 volunteers last year for over fifty nonprofit partner organizations and schools at farmers markets and other outdoor events and spaces. These volunteers go on to serve through these partner organizations as “big brothers and sisters,” mentors to help high school students navigate the challenges of young adulthood, tutors to help elementary school students improve their reading and math skills and much more.
