Celebration, competition and fun are coming to 17th St. NW on Tuesday. Returning for its 36th year, in collaboration with DC Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) and the Mayor’s office for LGBTQ Affairs, the 17th St. high heel race will take place on Oct. 24 in Dupont circle.
The race began more than three decades ago as a wager amongst drag queens, bartenders and community members to race in high heels to each of the LGBTQ bars along the street. The pre Halloween tradition has continued as a celebration of the diversity of the District’s LGBTQ community.
All are welcome to race and spectate. Spectators can find optimal viewing along 17th St. NW between R St. NW and Church St. NW. Everyone can enjoy a costume contest, parade and live performances featuring local drag artist, musicians, dancers and more.
17th St. NW between S St. NW and P St. NW will be open to pedestrians beginning at 6 p.m. At 7:30 p.m., registration for the high heel race will open at R St. NW and racers will take their marks at 8:55 p.m. | High Heel Racer Registration opens (R Street NW)An awards ceremony will take place at 9:15 p.m. followed by an after show at JR’s Bar (1519 17th St. NW).
