Elevated Streetscapes Coming to Connecticut Ave NW

The bustling Dupont Circle corridor is home to many of the District’s best shops, restaurants and small businesses. Next year, the city will begin a comprehensive construction process to expand public spaces and improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike along Connecticut Ave NW.

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has provided an overview of the design plans which include cyclist and pedestrian amenities, pedestrian-friendly traffic and green infrastructure elements. It will also connect the north-south pedestrian and bicycle corridor along Connecticut Ave NW.

A new deck-over plaza will also be installed over the Connecticut Ave NW underpass, between the northbound and southbound roads, to create an additional pedestrian space in the commercial and residential corridor. This space will provide additional space for walking, dining and special events.

The project, slated to begin January, aims to create a new streetscape along Connecticut Ave NW north of Dupont Circle. It will work to improve mobility and safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists while repurposing existing, unused spaces in the area.

The construction is expected to begin next spring with anticipated completion in the fall of 2026. A reconstruction public meeting is expected in winter 2024. Visit ctavestreetscape.wordpress.com for project updates, public meeting information and project contacts.
