Historic New Bethel Baptist Church (NBBC) celebrates its 120th Anniversary this year!
About New Bethel Baptist Church. New Bethel Baptist Church is a historic African American Baptist Church located in the heart of the Shaw Community of Washington, DC.
Previously led by Pastor Emeritus Walter Fauntroy, the first District of Columbia representative to the United States Congress and deputy to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., NBBC has been an anchor institution in Washington DC and for underserved communities across the country.
The celebration will feature a conversation on the state and future of the Black Church with some of today’s most prominent ministers, theologians, scholars, and civil rights activists. This panel discussion will take place Thursday, September 8 at NBBC (1739 Ninth St., NW).
The panel, moderated by son of NBBC and current Pastor Dexter Nutall, will feature Dr. Barbara Williams Skinner, Founder and CEO of the Skinner Institute; Rev. Dr. Derrick Harkins, Director Center for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, US Department of Housing and Urban Development; Gregory Jackson, Executive Director, Community Action Fund; Dr. Anika Brown, Pastor of Union Temple Baptist Church –and more.
Panelists who will discuss the impact, intersections and the future of the black church. Panelists will share perspectives, insights, and answer questions from the audience. This event will take place in-person and will also be streamed live on the church website.
In addition to the panel discussion, NBBC will host a series of other events thought the remainder of the year to celebrate this significant milestone in the history of the church including:
- Community Day, NBBC Parking Lot, Aug. 27, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
- “Homecoming” Revival Series Sept. 15 and 23, 2022, 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
- Homecoming Service and “SunDay Party” Tailgate, Sept. 25, 11 a.m.
- NBBC Honors – 120th Anniversary Gala, Dec. 15, 2022, Location TBD *ticketed event
